Intense yellow in colour, with gold highlights. The nose features notes of yellow peach, dried fruit, graphite, and chamomile. On the palate, hints of iodine, sage, and almond are delivered on a full-bodied wine with a wet-stone, savoury finish.
The Vermentino is grown in vineyards that lie 50m above sea level, with a western exposure. The soils are stony, volcanic rhyolite, with pockets of red sand. Their low fertility encourages flavour concentration and complexity in the grapes and the sandy component acts as a trigger on the aromatics of the Vermentino.
The grapes are gently pressed at cool, controlled temperatures, before fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged in 1,500L Tuscan oak and chestnut barrels for three months and then bottled for release.
Tenuta Meraviglia comprises 30 hectares of vineyards at the southern end of the Bolgheri denomination. Planted with Cabernet Franc and Vermentino, these certified organic vines are on an impressive plateau at 150 metres above sea level, surrounded by woodlands and boasting a splendid view of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Tuscan Archipelago and Corsica. The soils here are of volcanic origin, containing an abundance of rhyolite, a rock used extensively in the past for buildings. Just below the plateau is a disused rhyolite quarry, currently hidden by a dense forest. Plans are afoot to use it to house the new winery that Tenuta Meraviglia are planning to build.
