This wine is deep garnet in colour and boasts intense mulberry and violet aromas with a dusting of black pepper. The palate is full flavoured with sweet plum characters sitting on the mid-palate supported by elegant, plush tannins. It has a subtle savouriness balanced by notes of cardamom and nutmeg with fresh acidity and a persistent finish.

Grapes for the Three Lions Shiraz are sourced from 2 subregions within the Great Southern area of western Australia. 85% of the fruit comes from 25+ year-old vertical shoot positioned, cordon spur pruned vines that grow on soils composed of sand, gravel and ironstone. The remaining 15% comes from 20-year-old vines that are planted on deep gravel soils, also vertical shoot positioned and cordon spur pruned to enable easy foliage removal and reduce the risk of disease.

Upon arrival at the winery, the machine-harvested fruit was destemmed and crushed. Fermentation took place in sealed tanks, with twice daily pump overs. It was aged for 18 months in a combination of oak barriques and stainless steel tanks and blended before bottling.

Located in the Mount Barker township (part of the Shire of Plantagenet), Plantagenet was the first winery in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The name Plantagenet carries a rich heritage. The royal House of Plantagenet ruled England from 1154 to 1485, and centuries later, early English settlers brought the name to the Great Southern, naming the rural shire surrounding Mount Barker after the royal line. The arms of the Plantagenet dynasty were three lions passant guardant, termed colloquially “the arms of England”.
