Pale straw in colour, this wine opens with intense floral and lime notes. The palate is piercingly focused, with an vibrant core of citrus fruit and wet stone, underpinned by abundant natural acidity. A well structured and elegant wine with a long, clean finish.

The grapes for this Riesling come from estate-owned vineyards in the Great Southern. The vineyards are north facing to achieve optimum ripening in the cool climate, and are planted on ironstone derived gravelly loam over clay soils. There is judicial use of irrigation as required to maintain the health of the canopy and cover crops are used to maintain soil carbon and the microbial health of the vineyard.

The grapes went through selective machine harvesting in the cool of the night before arriving at the winery. The free run juice and pressings were separated and lightly fined before clarification (traditional cold settle). Fermentation took place in cool (<15 degrees) stainless steel using an indigenous yeast strain to highlight the natural fruit characteristics. Post-fermentation, the wine was racked and light lees were retained with regular stirring. The wine was blended and underwent a light fining before bottling.

Located in the Mount Barker township (part of the Shire of Plantagenet), Plantagenet was the first winery in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The name Plantagenet carries a rich heritage. The royal House of Plantagenet ruled England from 1154 to 1485, and centuries later, early English settlers brought the name to the Great Southern, naming the rural shire surrounding Mount Barker after the royal line. The arms of the Plantagenet dynasty were three lions passant guardant, termed colloquially “the arms of England”.
