Mount Pleasant Mothervine Hunter Valley Pinot Noir

Region: Hunter Valley New South Wales, Australia

Vintage: 2023

Bottle size: 75cl

Grape: Pinot Noir

ABV: 13.5%

This wine has notes of fresh and vibrant red and black berries, warm spices, and earthy characters. On the palate, super fine tannins drive the palate to a long and intense finish.

The grapes for this wine were sourced from Australia's oldest Pinot Noir vineyard, planted in 1921 by Maurice O'Shea. The vines from this block have provided the industry with the famed MV6 clone, which is now planted throughout the greatest Pinot Noir growing regions in Australia. Still producing today, the vines are carefully tended and produce wines of exceptional structure and power.

The fruit was entirely hand-picked. Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes were destemmed through an optical sorter and underwent a three day cold soak. Fermentation took place using only indigenous yeasts with two daily plunges. The wine was then pressed to French puncheons (15% of which were new) and aged for eight months. The wine was bottled without fining.

Mount Pleasant was founded in 1921 by legendary winemaker Maurice O’Shea, widely recognised as an industry pioneer and the father of modern Australian winemaking. According to James Halliday, who named Mount Pleasant 3rd in the inaugural 100 Top Wineries of Australia in 2023, “there’s an argument to say that Mount Pleasant is Australia’s most important wine estate. It’s certainly ground zero of fine Australian table wine, thanks to the legendary exploits of its founding winemaker, Maurice O’Shea, from the 1920s onwards. But successive winemakers, from Phil Ryan to Jim Chatto to Adrian Sparks, have inched the wines of this estate to higher and higher levels, to the point where now a whole series of its current-release wines are classics in the making
