Ruby-red colour, of great depth. Aromas are very typical of Cabernet Sauvignon, with ripe black and red fruit, such as cherries in syrup, blackberries, black plums, and raspberries. Notes of dried fig are present, as well as candied fruit, tobacco, cedar, fresh coffee, toasted nuts, and soft notes of dulce de leche and vanilla, all due to the time spent in French oak barrels. On the palate, it is complex and mouth-filling, with soft tannins. Its body seems powerful at first, gradually softening and blending with the flavours and aromas, which linger for a long time.
The vineyards destined for Taita are located at Finca de El Arcángel in the Marchigüe area, 28 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean. Like a large percentage of Chilean soils, those from Marchigüe are of granitic origin, with high clay content. The Taita vineyards are dry farmed and managed naturally so therefore the vines have fewer bunches with smaller and more concentrated grapes.
When they started producing Montes Alpha in 1987, they needed balanced yields and to harvest when the grapes were ripe. They adapted these practices to all their vineyards and the results were startling. Montes’ own vineyards now cover 75% of their requirements. The other 25% of fruit is produced in vineyards that they have planted, cultivated and picked. In other words, they control everything except the ownership of the land. In addition to this control over the vineyard, they also sell in bulk what is not good enough to go into the bottles that carry their label. Having made the selection in the vineyard, they are able to make a further selection in the winery. The results are there for you to taste. In 2020, Aurelio Montes’ illustrious career was recognised in the form of the International Wine Challenge’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
