Pale ruby red in colour, this medium-bodied wine has pronounced red berry fruit and red cherries on the nose. The palate mirrors the initial aromas with well-integrated tannins leading to a fresh finish.
This wine is a blend of two varieties sourced from cool mountain sites in Stellenbosch, Paarl and Darling. The grapes were destemmed and lightly crushed before fermentation in stainless steel tanks. After malolactic fermentation, the wine was transferred to 225-litre barrels for 15 months of ageing. Maturation took place in a mix of French and American oak, primarily second-, third-, and fourth-fill barrels. Each component was aged separately before final blending to achieve the intended style, and the wine was lightly filtered prior to bottling.
Charles Back, the visionary behind the acclaimed Fairview winery, is also the creator of the playful Goats do Roam label. When first launched, it famously ruffled feathers in France and has since become synonymous with superb quality and exceptional value. Legend has it that a few adventurous goats from Fairview’s long-standing herd (suppliers of milk for the estate’s award-winning cheeses) escaped their paddock after Charles’s young son Jason accidentally left the gate open. The goats wandered into the vineyards, nibbling on some of the ripest grapes, and so the name Goats do Roam was born.
