Chateau du Coing de St. Fiacre Muscadet Sevre et Maine Sur Lie

Region: Loire, France

Vintage: 2023

Bottle size: 75cl

Grape: Muscadet

ABV: 12%

This wine is light gold in colour. The nose displays aromas of green apple and white peaches. Full-bodied, the palate is well balanced with concentrated flavours of citrus fruit, white flowers and apricot, which are well-balanced with a crisp acidity and gentle minerality. The time spent on lees adds a lovely textural richness to the wine.

The Melon de Bourgogne grapes are grown in Véronique's 50 hectares of guyot trained Muscadet vines, located at the meeting point of the Sèvre and Maine rivers. The south-facing slopes lie on distinctive gneiss and shist soils, which give a particularly racy, fragrant style of Muscadet. Unusually for an area dominated by the négociants, Château du Coing is family-run and uses only estate-grown fruit since 2010. They began the conversion to organic farming in 2021.

The grapes were gently pressed using a pneumatic press. Fermentation took place in underground stainless steel tanks at 20°C over two to three weeks. After fermentation, the wine was matured on lees in tank before bottling. The bottling of 'Sur Lie' wines cannot legally start until after the first Thursday in the March following the vintage.

As its name suggests, Château du Coing de St. Fiacre is situated in Saint Fiacre, a small village in Muscadet's Sèvre et Maine district. Véronique Günther-Chéreau is the current generation producing wine at the estate, which has been in her family since 1421. Véronique grew up at Château du Coing de St. Fiacre, and after achieving a doctorate in pharmacy, she returned to take the reins in 1990. In 2011, she was joined by her daughter Aurore after she completed her biology and oenology studies in Dijon. Unusually for an area dominated by négociants, Château du Coing de St. Fiacre uses only estate-grown fruit sourced from its 40 hectares of Melon de Bourgogne vines. Their vineyards are planted on distinctive gneiss soils, located at the meeting point of the Sèvre and Maine rivers.
