This wine expertly showcases the power and elegance of Grenache. The nose displays opulent aromas of ripe black cherry, wild herbs, black pepper and star anise. The palate is full-bodied and pure with silky, yet grippy tannins.
The fruit for Amiral G is sourced from one of the estate's best single vineyards, which is situated on one of the highest hills of the appellation. The vines are 25 years old on average and are planted on galets roulés (pudding stones) over red clay soils, resulting in a powerful yet elegant expression of Grenache. Its name is a tribute to the Château's 1767 founder, L'Amiral Gérin.
The hand harvested fruit was 100% destemmed and crushed before fermentation at around 25°C in a concrete tank. Maceration lasted around 30 days, during which time pump overs and rack and returns were carried out daily, according to the wine’s developing profile. The wine was then aged for 18 months in new 600L demi-muids.
The 18th century Château de Vaudieu has been in the Bréchet family for over 50 years and today is run by Laurent Bréchet, the grandson of the original owner. The name ‘Vaudieu’ originates from ‘Vallée de Dieu’, or ‘Valley of God’ – in reference to the beauty of the area around Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
