Intense ruby red in colour, this wine has vivid aromas of morello cherry and sweet spices. The palate is rich and supple.
Grapes for this wine come from Nizza Monferrato and surrounding areas. The vineyards are south and south-west facing at 200-300m above sea level, and the soils comprise of calcareous clayey marl. The vines are trained using the Guyot system and average between 10 and 30 years of age.
After a careful selection of the grapes, fermentation was carried out for about 10 days at a controlled temperature of 28°C in stainless-steel vats, with malolactic conversion allowed to take place. The wine was then racked to large Slavonian oak casks for six month before bottling.
Founded in 1955, Cantina di Nizza is a cooperative winery comprising 200 members with 550 hectares of vineyards around Nizza Monferrato. This is an excellent area for Barbera, which constitutes over 60% of the grapes harvested and crushed by the co-op. In Alba, the best sites are dedicated to Nebbiolo, while in Asti this privilege is afforded to Barbera.
