Bright ruby in colour, the wine opens with fresh aromas of cherry and raspberry, complemented by subtle herbal and mineral notes. The palate is lively and refreshing, defined by vibrant acidity and fine tannins that balance its bright fruit and earthy nuances. The finish is long and expressive, leaving a sense of freshness and authenticity that reflects its high-altitude origin and natural winemaking approach.
The certified organic Can Sumoi vineyards are located in Baix Penedès (Serra de L'Home, el Montmell), situated between 350-700 metres above sea level. There are 20 hectares of vineyards planted with vines that are over 40 years old, surrounded by 380 hectares of woodland. The cool mountain climate results in fresh wines. The Sumoll was sourced from the Masllorenç and Rodonyà villages, from vines growing at 300 metres above sea level on shallow calcareous soils. Garnatxa is sourced from the Ermita and Mas de Pla de Manlleu plots in the Montmell Mountains, at altitudes of 600 metres above sea level. Here, the poor, stony soils aid ripeness and result in wines with pronounced flavour intensity.
The grapes were destemmed and gently tread under inert conditions before undergoing alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts at temperatures between 20 and 24 °C over approximately 15 days, after which the wine was pressed. Malolactic fermentation occurred spontaneously. Ageing continued for nine months, with 80% matured in stainless steel tanks and 20% in chestnut barrels, preserving freshness while adding subtle texture and complexity.
Can Sumoi is a collaboration between Pepe Raventós of Raventós i Blanc and his childhood friend, Francesc Escala. For many years, they dreamed of making still wines in their native Catalonia. One day, while on a bike ride high up in the mountains of West Penedès, Pepe set eyes on a derelict 17th-century Finca. He returned with Francesc, who was equally enthralled by the Finca and the land. In 2016, the duo decided to revive the rundown property and realise their dream, founding Can Sumoi.
