Pale straw colour. The aromas reveal subtle suggestions of pineapple and lychee and a hint of banana. Well integrated wood is just detectable with a discreet hint of vanilla. In the mouth the wine is balanced with green apple and soft grapefruit undertones denoting fine, crisp acidity.

The Viosinho grapes are entirely sourced from a Symington family owned vineyard at an altitude range of 500 to 600 metres. Other important components are the Códega do Larinho and Gouveio varietites, also sourced from high altitude vineyards from the Murça and Alijó areas, from which we conserved the necessary acidity for the barrel-fermented wines, left on lees until bottling.

Altano is produced by the Symingtons, a leading winemaking family of Scottish, English and Portuguese ancestry who have been making Port in the Douro for five generations. Today, the family own the largest collection of individual vineyards in the Douro Valley – a unique landholding of 26 Quintas in the prime Cima-Corgo and Douro Superior subregions. This sustained strategy of reinvestment in the region’s finest vineyards is unmatched by any producer.
