Lively aromas of Morello cherry and pomegranate are complemented by hints of orange zest, leather, star anise and clove. The mouthwatering palate is marked by notes of tea leaf, cherry and red plum as classic Monte Rosso earth and baking spice linger on the extended finish.

Crafted entirely from Zinfandel vines planted in 1893 in the revered Monte Rosso Vineyard, named for its iron-rich, red volcanic soils. Though yields are small, the old gnarly vines produce exceptional fruit with deep concentration. The grapes were picked and sorted by hand. They were then gravity fed into small, open top tanks for a three-day cold soak before primary fermentation. The wine was aged in a combination of French oak barrels (48% new) and American oak barrels (19% new) for a total of 15 months.

The gryphon is the traditional symbol of the town of Genoa, Italy, the birthplace of Louis Martini. It also symbolizes wisdom, courage, and leadership, qualities inherent in Louis as he built the first bonded winery in Napa post-prohibition. He recognized the quality of the terroir long before others in purchasing the Monte Rosso Vineyard in 1936, and was among the first to bottle vintage varietal wine.
