Selvapiana Villa di Petrognano Pomino Rosso

Region: Chianti, Tuscany, Italy

Vintage: 2021

Bottle size: 75cl

Grape: Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot

ABV: 13%

Deep ruby red in colour, this wine has a rich bouquet of red and black fruits on the nose. The palate is rounded and rich, with the Sangiovese bringing lively acidity to the richer, blackcurrant notes of the Cabernet, and the supple tannins of the Merlot.

Planted between 2006 and 2007, the Guyot-trained vines are rooted in stony, well-drained Galestro soils at 450 meters above sea level, with a south to south-western exposure. The vines are farmed organically at a density of 5,500 vines per hectare.

Fruit was hand harvested. After destemming and pressing, fermentation took place in temperature-controlled, stainless-steel vats with natural yeasts. Maceration lasted for around three weeks, with daily pumping over. After malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged for 18 months; the Sangiovese was aged in 25-hectolitre French oak casks, while the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot were aged in French oak barriques. The final blend took place in stainless steel vats, after which the wine was bottled and aged for a further six months prior to release.

Francesco Giuntini of the Selvapiana winery first began renting Villa di Petrognano in Pomino in 1993. Francesco’s son, Federico Giuntini Masseti, is now at the winemaking helm, continuing the great work of the late Franco Bernabei, who was winemaking consultant.
