The wine is mid to light garnet in colour. The nose is full of ripe dark and red fruit aromas, which combine with a delicate spiciness. The palate is full and rich complemented by good acidity and a velvety texture from the fine grained tannins. The finish is long with great persistence.
This wine is made exclusively from Sangiovese grapes grown in a one-hectare vineyard planted in 1990. Situated atop a south-east-facing hill, the site is named “Vigna delle Conchiglie”, a reference to its ancient marine soils, rich in calcareous seashells (“conchiglie”). The vineyard is planted at a density of 5,950 vines per hectare and trained using vertical shoot positioning and Guyot pruning. Yields are kept low at less than 1 kilogram per vine, equivalent to 5 tonnes per hectare.
The grapes were hand-harvested in small 16-kilogram crates and carefully transported to the winery, where they underwent gentle destemming and crushing. Using a gravity-flow system, the grapes — including 50% whole clusters — were transferred to fermenters without pumping. Fermentation took place in small, tulip-shaped 16-hectolitre concrete tanks at a controlled maximum temperature of 26°C over 10–12 days using indigenous yeasts. Following primary fermentation, the wine remained on the skins for a further seven days of extended maceration before being racked into tight-grained, 16.5-hectolitre untoasted oak casks for 20 months of ageing. The wine was bottled without fining or filtration.
Alberto Antonini’s Poggiotondo estate is situated in the hills to the north-west of Empoli in western Tuscany. These hills are south and south-west facing, planted primarily with Sangiovese. The estate has been certified organic since the 2014 vintage.
