This wine is deep red in colour. The nose is elegant with a blend of red fruit aromas as well as hints of black pepper and clove. Ripe cherry flavours on the palate are coupled with grainy tannins and a vibrant, fresh acidity on the finish.

Planted in 1928 in Cerreto Guidi, this half-hectare vineyard reflects the traditional field-blend plantings of the time, combining indigenous red and white grape varieties. Among the oldest Chianti vineyards in the region, the vines have adapted naturally to their environment over nearly a century, with deep root systems thriving in calcareous soils. The narrowly spaced rows, originally designed for horse cultivation, are too tight for machinery, requiring all vineyard work to be carried out by hand.

The grapes were hand-harvested into 16kg crates before being gently destemmed and crushed at the winery. Using gravity flow rather than pumping, the fruit was transferred to small, tulip-shaped, temperature-controlled concrete tanks, with 50% whole bunches retained. Fermentation took place over 10–12 days at temperatures up to 24°C using indigenous yeasts. Following a further seven days of maceration, the wine was aged for 20 months in tight-grained, untoasted 10hl oak casks before being bottled unfined to retain purity and integrity of flavour.

Alberto Antonini’s Poggiotondo estate is situated in the hills to the north-west of Empoli in western Tuscany. These hills are south and south-west facing, planted primarily with Sangiovese. The estate has been certified organic since the 2014 vintage.
