A beautiful, translucent purple colour. The nose opens with tones of black cherry, blueberry, violet, liquorice, and fresh thyme. The palate is fresh with a blast of red and black fruits, and blueberry. It has a very refined tannic texture with a touch of menthol and lingering finish with a reminiscence of tart fruits and a smooth aftertaste.
This Dolcetto is named after the two vineyards where the grapes come from, Coste di Vergne and Fossati, both in the township of Barolo with high altitudes ranging from 420 to 240 metres above sea level. Coste di Vergne has a south-western exposure while Fossati has a south-eastern exposure. These two vineyards share the soil composition characterised by Sant’Agata fossils and Messinian sediments.
The Vaira family is based in the small village of Vergne, which sits above the town of Barolo on the westernmost edge of the denomination. They have 20 hectares of Barolo vineyard planted along this western part of the zone, the prime site being Bricco delle Viole, which sits at over 400 metres above sea level. The elevation and westerly orientation make this vineyard an exceptional cru, as it benefits from the cool breezes that flow from the mountains to the west, as well as from morning and evening sun. The style of wine from this site, scented yet ripe, supple yet with great ageing potential, sets the template for the rest of the Vajra wines.
