Charlemagne was very fond of the wine from Le Corton which at the time was red. Towards the end of the Emperor's life, the vineyards facing south were planted with chardonnay to produce a white wine to not stain his white beard. Today Bouchard Pere & Fils is an important owner in Corton Charlemagne with 3.65 hectares

Founded in 1731 in Beaune by Michel Bouchard, Bouchard Père & Fils, is one of the oldest wine estates in Burgundy, perpetuating tradition for nearly 3 centuries and 9 generations. This desire to build up an exceptional estate in Côte d’Or endured through the generations and acquisitions in the best Villages were added throughout the 19th century and again in the early 20th century.
