The nose reveals smoky notes alongside sour cherry, liquorice, almonds, and subtle herbal aromas. On the palate, the wine presents cool and herbaceous characteristics with hints of blue slate, delicate marzipan, fine Earl Grey tea nuances, and subtle white pepper spice. The balanced interplay of fruit and spice culminates in a deep, elegant, and persistent finish.
The 34 hectares of vineyard on the Maximin Grünhaus Estate are separated into three main parts. Abtsberg, Herrenberg and Bruderberg which differ mainly by their soil type and steepness. All three of them are classified as VDP Grosse Lage which means Grand Cru vineyard. The vines for the `Grünhäuser` Pinot Noir are planted on blue Devonian slate and harvested from young, carefully selected plots in the Abtsberg vineyard.
After careful selection in the vineyards, spontaneous fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts in small tanksThe wine is then gently transferred to barriques to mature for 24 months before being bottled without filtration and released.
Located on steep, south-facing slopes two kilometres from where the river Ruwer meets the Mosel, the estate of Maximin Grünhaus has a history of viticulture that dates back to Roman times. It takes its name from the Abbey of Saint Maximin, a Benedictine monastery which owned the land from the 7th to the 18th century. Passing into French administration under Napoleon and then eventually to the von Schubert family in the late 19th century, the estate is now overseen by sixth-generation family member Maximin Von Schubert, who took over from his father Carl Von Schubert in 2014.
