The palate is elegant and long, the red fruit characters drive through with intensity and focus. Underlying acidity and subtle oak support the fruit characters to a long, lingering and fresh finish.

Maurice O’Shea purchased the Rosehill site in 1945. He selected this vineyard for its similarities to the Old Hill & Old Paddock vineyards, sharing similar elevation and soil structure. The soil is a rare ancient volcanic loam. Its high elevation (80 -120m) and northeasterly aspect makes it one of the Hunter Valley’s most prestigious vineyards. Maurice elected to plant only Shiraz at Rosehill and vines were planted in 1946. An additional plot of this vineyard was acquired and re-planted in 1965. Today the vineyard has 27 hectares of Shiraz, one hectare of Touriga and 0.6 hectares of Mencia.

Once at the winery, the hand-picked grapes were destemmed and chilled before being moved to open top fermenters where a short cold soak followed. Once fermentation started, pumpovers were carried out three times a day. The wine was pressed off and racked to tanks for malolactic fermentation. At the end of malolactic fermentation, the wine was racked to French puncheons (20% new) to age for nine months before being blended and bottled.

Mount Pleasant was founded in 1921 by legendary winemaker Maurice O’Shea, widely recognised as an industry pioneer and the father of modern Australian winemaking. According to James Halliday, who named Mount Pleasant 3rd in the inaugural 100 Top Wineries of Australia in 2023, “there’s an argument to say that Mount Pleasant is Australia’s most important wine estate. It’s certainly ground zero of fine Australian table wine, thanks to the legendary exploits of its founding winemaker, Maurice O’Shea, from the 1920s onwards. But successive winemakers, from Phil Ryan to Jim Chatto to Adrian Sparks, have inched the wines of this estate to higher and higher levels, to the point where now a whole series of its current-release wines are classics in the making

https://www.mountpleasantwines.com.au

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0506/5405/2509/files/MountPleasantRosehillHunterValleyShiraz.png?v=1788272438
