Mitolo The Angela McLaren Vale Shiraz

Region: McLaren Vale, South Australia

Vintage: 2019

Bottle size: 75cl

Grape: Shiraz

ABV: 14.5%

Deep ruby in colour, this shiraz opens with a ripe and complex bouquet of black plum, violet, cedar and cocoa. The palate has vibrant fruit notes framed by savoury characteristics of earth and ground coffee. Powerful and concentrated, this is a wine with seamlessly integrated flavours, fine-grained tannins and bright acidity.

The Shiraz fruit for this wine is sourced from Sandra's block, located at the southern end of McLaren Vale near the seaside town of Willunga. The soil type moves from Biscay clays to more alluvial clay loams of the Christies Beach formation, with gravel and rocky fragments throughout. This soil type is free draining, resulting in less vigour over spring and more content vines in the ripening period. Sea breezes also mediate day time heat during summer and the critical ripening period, leading to a brighter wine style with signature Mitolo Shiraz softness. The vines are upwards of 30 years old.

McLaren Vale-based Mitolo is a family-owned winery established in 1999 by Frank Mitolo, whose Italian roots inspired his early interest in, and enthusiasm for, good food and great wine. Winemaker Ben Glaetzer became a partner in the business in 2001. The fusion of Frank’s knowledge of the land and business acumen with Ben’s winemaking talent has resulted in Mitolo becoming one of Australia’s most awarded wineries. From the approachable ‘Jester’ range to the premium wines that wow the critics, Mitolo has made a name for itself as one of the Australian producers to watch.
