Dark ruby in colour, this wine opens with intense aromatics of raspberry, blackberry, and aromatic dry spices. The palate shows flavours of bright cherry, spiced plum and mulberry, complemented by succulent acidity and silky texture. There are fine gravelly tannins which last throughout the long finish.
The grapes come from three different vineyards. The Grenache is sourced from dry grown bush vines in Blewitt Springs where the soil is deep alluvial sand. At 200 metres above sea level, it is a cooler site than where the Shiraz and Sagrantino parcels are sourced, producing Grenache that is both light and intensely structured. The Shiraz and Sagrantino are sourced from the Lopresti Vineyards of Sandra’s Block and Lot 10, found south on the clay flatlands near Aldinga. Here, black Biscay clays and alluvial clay loams predominate, producing grapes of great depth and concentration.
McLaren Vale-based Mitolo is a family-owned winery established in 1999 by Frank Mitolo, whose Italian roots inspired his early interest in, and enthusiasm for, good food and great wine. Winemaker Ben Glaetzer became a partner in the business in 2001. The fusion of Frank’s knowledge of the land and business acumen with Ben’s winemaking talent has resulted in Mitolo becoming one of Australia’s most awarded wineries. From the approachable ‘Jester’ range to the premium wines that wow the critics, Mitolo has made a name for itself as one of the Australian producers to watch.
