La Giustiniana Montessora Gavi di Gavi 2021
Region: Gavi, Piedmont, Italy
Bottle size: 75cl
Notes: Vegetarian; Vegan
This wine is light straw-yellow in colour with fresh notes of flint and flowers. On the palate, it is intense and concentrated with a lovely pure fruit character. Flavours of peach and lime follow through to a long, mineral finish.
Grapes are grown in the five-hectare Montessora vineyard in Rovereto di Gavi, at an altitude of 400 metres above sea level. Vines are between 35-70 years old, Guyot trained, and planted at a density of 4,000 vines per hectare. Soils are mostly gravel with alluvial clays rich in iron, which imparts body, complexity and minerality to the wine.
This estate covers 110 hectares in the heart of the commune of Rovereto in Gavi. Originally, this land was part of a Benedictine convent which was bought by the Giustiniani, a military family from the Republic of Genoa, in 1625. Wine was already produced from the then 40 hectares of vineyards, since the Benedictine monks cultivated the first vines planted here. Today, the winery is managed by Magda Pedrini and the production is focussed on showing the potential of Gavi di Gavi from the two single vineyards of the estate: Lugarara and Montessora
