The nose is expressive with blackberry, raspberry, and clove notes, followed by subtle tobacco and wild herb aromas. On the palate, rich flavours of dark fruits and chocolate are supported by velvety tannins, delivering a smooth, well-balanced finish.

The fruit for this wine is sourced from selected vineyards in Aigialia and Nemea, situated at elevations between 400 and 800 metres above sea level. Here, the soil is comprised of calcareous clay and sand, resulting in intensely concentrated fruit. The vines are trained in the Double Royat trellising system and managed with minimal irrigation, inorganic pest control and mechanical soil cultivation. All fruit is harvested by hand to ensure optimal quality and precision at harvest.

The hand-selected grapes were destemmed and lightly crushed before undergoing a three-day cold pre-fermentation maceration at 10°C. Fermentation took place over 12 days at temperatures ranging from 12–23°C, allowing for gentle aromatic extraction. After completing full malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged for six months in second and third-use oak barrels to build texture and complexity while preserving varietal expression.

Aigialeia, in the northwestern Peloponnese, is among Greece’s most distinctive wine-growing regions. Set against the rugged terrain of the Panachaiko mountains, the area’s high elevations, northern exposure, steep, sloping vineyards and proximity to the Corinthian Gulf help moderate high temperatures, creating a growing environment unlike anything else in the area. It is here that Michalis Kanakaris founded his eponymous winery in 1979, focusing on indigenous varieties Roditis, Sideritis and Mavro Kalavrytino grown on Aigialeia’s sandy, red/white clay soils. Today, Kanakaris is run by the third generation of Michalis’ family, with brothers Stefanos and Michalis taking over the reins in 2009.

https://www.kanakariswines.gr
