Deep ruby red in colour, the nose displays rich and complex aromas of black cherry, black pepper and caramel notes. The richest wine produced in Monthélie, it is similar to Pommard in style. Full-bodied on the palate with ripe black fruit and smooth tannins, culminating in a wonderfully fresh and long finish.
The fruit for Monthélie 1er Cru `Meix Batille` is sourced from a small block of 35-year-old Pinot Noir vines located on south-facing slopes at 200 metres above sea level. The soils are deep and predominantly clay and limestone, and this premier cru site is well-known for its powerful wines that have strong tannic structure and spicy notes.
This 4.5-hectare domaine was founded by the Changarnier family in 1720, 69 years prior to the French revolution. The family recently unearthed documents showing that one of their predecessors was born in 1629 in Monthélie, and worked in the fields for the monks of the Citeaux Abbaye. Today, the domaine is owned by brothers Claude and Antoine Changarnier and has been managed by the estimable Fabrice Groussin since 2015. Fabrice runs the vineyards organically and biodynamically, producing 25,000 bottles from 10 different appellations.
